My partner and I are travelling through Brazil, birding as we go. I contacted Daniel from a recommendation of another bird guide in Minas Gerais, finding him kind, responsive, and extremely helpful and accommodating. We stayed for two nights at Daniel’s place in the Atlantic Forest, having two full days guided birding. Accommodation - We cannot recommend this enough - it’s brilliant. The space is perfect for birders and is replete with feeders, attracting all manner of hummingbirds, tanagers, and euphonias. The rooms are very comfortable and the food (all prepared by Daniel’s wife Sonia) was excellent. Far better than we’ve had in b&b’s or hotels that cost a lot more, and prepared at “bird watcher friendly” times (i.e. early). Guiding - Having hired guides in virtually every country in South America and throughout Europe I can genuinely say that Daniel is the best bird guide I have ever had. His knowledge and enthusiasm is palpable and infectious and you truly get the impression of being with a real expert (the multiple publications he has to his name and the library of bird sounds he has personally made add to this impression). Daniel has a brilliant ear, being able to hear and identify birds well before I could pick up on them and his patience and knowledge of behaviour meant that we identified 170 species in one day. Daniel’s English is perfect and he is amiable, friendly, and conversational and a real delight to spend time with, which is so important in a guide. One of the real stand outs for me was the attentiveness of Daniel. In advance of the trip I sent a list of birds I wanted to see; he customised the itinerary and frequently referred back to it throughout both days to make sure we were covering them; as well as asking me whether I had ever seen a bird that he could hear (often the answer was no so he would then seek it out). This is a real positive over what could have been following a ‘standard’ or ‘ready-made’ itinerary. I’m so excited to see how Daniel and the Irmãos Mello develop in the coming years and cannot wait to come back.

Absolutely brilliant. Daniel and Gabriel are extremely knowledgeable, professional, patient, and friendly. I needed some Portuguese practice but they are both fluent in English. The amount of birds that they were able to locate and identify was mind-blowing. While I go out and locate perhaps 15 or 20 in a day, also in the Atlantic Forest, we were rocking upwards of 80 - and managed to get photos of most. In addition, the accommodation is clean and well presented, and the food is divine - restaurant class meals. I'm a pescatarian and this was accommodated with absolute ease. 5/5 and I'll be back out with them for winter birding!

There are so many good things to say about my experience birding with Daniel and Gabriel of Irmãos Mello Birding Tours in the Mata Atlantica, not far from Rio. These guys are ideal guides. They are friendly, enthusiastic and patient and know the ideal habitats and songs to find a wide variety of birds. The "base camp" for some fantastic birding was Tukani Lodge, perfectly situated next to Serra dos Orgaos National Park. The lodge is comfortable, safe, has great home cooked meals and a front porch with feeders, which is a great spot to bird in itself.From Tukani Lodge there is great birding just footsteps away in the National Park, or within driving range to many hotspots nearby, in many habitats. Their knowledge of the local area, plus their superb birding skills means you will see a ton of great birds and have an overall top notch birding experience. Highly recommended.

Conhecer as aves do Rio de Janeiro sob o comando dos Irmãos Mello (na minha expedição fotográfica com o Daniel Mello) foi uma experiência maravilhosa e inigualável. Por estar rumo às 1300 espécies de aves já fotografadas, a minha lista de novas espécies era extremamente restrita. Como disse o Daniel, era a lista mais restrita de todas as pessoas que guiou. Diante dessa lista, Daniel organizou com maestria um roteiro para que buscássemos nas matas do Rio o máximo de aves raras para mim, inclusive com parceria com o guia Carlos Eduardo Blanco, em Angra dos Reis, para que eu fotografasse os endêmicos formigueiro-de-cabeça-negra e papa-moscas-estrela e também o tão sonhado tapaculo-pintado. Daniel não mediu esforços para que eu fotografasse o meu maior desejo fotográfico: marreca-de-bico-roxo! Quase 7 anos em busca desta espécie e, desta vez, graças aos "olhos de águia", experiência e dedicação do Daniel, eu consegui fotografá-la. E, pelas matas do Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos, com ouvidos atentos o tempo todo, ele também me apresentou o lindo e encantador apuim-de-cauda-amarela, entre outras novas espécies. E assim foi: um lifer aqui, um lifer acolá, restando um saldo muito positivo para mim, apesar da estrita lista de possibilidades que eu tinha. Além da experiência técnica, Daniel foi um amigo que me cativou. Ele foi muito dedicado, atencioso e de uma gentileza sem igual. Eu só tenho a agradecer pelas novas espécies de aves que fotografei e pela atenção imensa a mim dedicada nesses cinco dias felizes passarinhando pelas matas de alguns Municípios do Rio de Janeiro. I have recently enjoyed a three week birdwatching holiday in Brazil during which I had the pleasure of spending two days in the company of Daniel and Gabriel Mello and with them visited APA de Guapimirim , the foothills of Serra dos Órgãos and REGUA. My only regret was that I could not allocate more time to spend with the twins because the experience was truly magical. They have a vast knowledge of the birds found in the areas visited and of the various habitats that are encountered. As well as having excellent guiding skills they are two extremely affable guys who will stop at nothing to satisfy the client’s want list. With their extreme birding skills and engaging personalities they have made my time with them one that I will never forget.

Passarinhando com Daniel Mello (setembro de 2018) foi uma experiencia muito boa, tanto pela beleza dos ambientes que visitamos, quanto pelos lifers que eu consegui e ainda pela companhia dele que tive durante esta expedição. As localidades que visitamos são verdadeiramente deslumbrantes. Como eu cheguei com uma lista já reduzida dos lifers, não foi fácil encontrar os pássaros que me interessavam, mas mesmo assim conseguimos uma boa parte. Entre os pontos que o Daniel conhecia muito bem, aproveitamos para trocar informações sobre experiencias em geral, o que foi muito agradável também. Algumas aves que procurei são verdadeiras raridades e vale a pena investir em oportunidade de observa-las.

Conheço os irmãos Mello há vários anos. Sabia das suas habilidades como fotógrafos de aves e na arte de tratar imagens, na qual são verdadeiros magos. Ha cerca de um mês tive o prazer de comprovar outra grande aptidão, na pessoa do Daniel, embora saiba que Gabriel também a possui na mesma medida. Já fui guiado por eles em várias localidades do estado do Rio de Janeiro, como Nova Friburgo, Teresópolis, Cachoeiras de Macacu e Guapimirim, e só tenho elogios! Desde a preparação do roteiro até o empenho total para que todos os objetivos da viagem fossem alcançados. Demonstraram conhecer profundamente a região, sabendo tanto lugares específicos para encontrar certas espécies como tendo o ouvido e preparo para identificar as supresas que apareciam no decorrer do caminho. Além disso, eles tem o olhar fotográfico para nos orientar de tal forma que tiremos a melhor fotografia. Fui muito bem atendido em todos os momentos, pré-viagem (definição do roteiro, esclarecimento de dúvidas, etc.), durante a viagem e no pós-viagem (identificação de espécies, etc.). Recomendadíssimo!

Last summer I spent a week birding in the province of Rio de Janeiro with Daniel and Gabriel Mello. It was a wonderful experience. Not only are both very knowledgeable about birds and photography, they are also very nice people to deal with, very efficient, very patient and always smiling. Esse meninos são demais! Além de saber os lugares certos para cada gosto de observação, cada tipo de "cliente", eles sabem ser amigos. Sempre sorrindo, independente de a cliente estar com enxaqueca, coisa que aconteceu em uma de nossas saídas, e que fez tudo passar... Esforçados, sensacionais! Recomendo e sempre que vou ao Rio temos que agendar uma saída! Nem que seja a mais simples, mas para eles e para as aves não existe o simples... Até porque são profissionais nisso.
