Bird observatory and accommodation for birders
Welcome to Casa Tukani: a house that breathes birdwatching!
In 2022, Daniel Mello and his wife Sonia moved to Guapimirim, in a mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro called "Região Serrana", where they make their dream come true of transforming their house into a personal bird observatory. More than that: they decided to open the doors to accommodate people with the same interest!
More than 250 birds recorded
A bird observatory is a centre for the study of bird migration and bird populations. Here at Casa Tukani we carry out a long-term bird surveying using the eBird platform. We are in the foothills of the Serra dos Órgãos (150 meters above sea level), one of the most biodiverse regions in the Atlantic Forest domain. This constant bird counting makes it possible to better understand the population dynamics of both the resident birds and the migratory species that pass by the region while moving to distant places or even performing altitudinal migration in the Serra dos Órgãos itself. In our survey, we have already been recorded more than 260 birds species in Casa Tukani and surroundings, including some that had never been found in the region before! Check it out:
A colorful show at our bird feeders
Watching birds from our front porch is an amazing experience, especially in the winter! Here we have bird feeders that attract several multicolored species of the Atlantic Forest (Tanagers, Euphonias, Parakeets, Hummingbirds and others). More than 40 species have already been recorded visiting our feeders, with the highest concentration of birds in the coldest months (between April and September). A place to stay during your birding tour
At Casa Tukani, we offer rooms prepared exclusively to host birders and bird photographers during our birding tours throughout the Serra dos Órgãos region. From an early breakfast to a comfortable overnight stay, everything is carefully designed to make life easier for our guests and help them make the most of their time in the field.
Safety and connection with nature
Casa Tukani is located in a condominium surrounded by greenery in the small town of Guapimirim — a safe and peaceful place for birding, where you can forget the worries of big cities.
Trails and parks around us
In Casa Tukani surroundings there are some trails that can be easly accessed by walking, where we can find many forestal species typical from the lowlands. In addition, we are close to the main parks and reserves in the Serra dos Órgãos region, places that can be quick accessed by car: Fazenda Colomi (4 miles), Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos (Guapimirim headquarters - 7 miles / Teresópolis headquarters - 13 miles), Parque Estadual dos Três Picos (Vale da Revolta headquarters - 15 miles / Jacarandá headquarters - 18 miles), APA Guapimirim (23 miles) and Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu - REGUA (28 miles).
